Sync.

BEST VIEWED IN FULLSCREEN.

Creative Brief.

SYNC is an experimental piece that focuses on the concept of free will versus determinism, through the interaction between a subject in videos and an omnipresent computer user. The project creates the illusion of a person moving through a space, one set by someone higher. As it continues, the person becomes aware of his situation, and attempts to break free from the confines set before him. A large focus of the project was to utilize After Effects as the main program in order to simulate a computer desktop. This builds on videos made by others that also deal with the illusion of space, but with a different twist.

Better in HD.

A little late, but I thought it was an interesting video that deals with a lot of stuff my project is doing, but definitely a professional work.

Youtube musicians are mashed up into a mini-album that ACTUALLY sounds good. Apparently it's not that new, but it is to me. Tracks 3 and 4 are the best. Nothing too relevant with any projects, but definitely something to see and hear.

Creative Brief

  1. Title - Sync

  2. Overview - The project initially appears as a Windows desktop, with video files being played onscreen. A subject appears in these videos, existing in a world only as large as the files opened. The unseen computer user attempts to combine these videos to present a coherent world. For example, if the subject runs off-frame, another video should "catch" him and continuing his action. If there is no video, then there is no world beyond the file that he is currently in. The situation escalates as the subject realizes he is under the control of this unseen user, and attempts to break out of this apparent prison.

  3. Audience - The audience would primarily be in the 18-34 age range, and interested in the same sort of oddball video and art that this project would perhaps fall under. The video must have the same kind of engaging and interesting quality that would appeal to them and is reminiscent of other influences like Gondry music videos.

  4. Key Message - The project attempts to convey the themes of space and freedom by showing the interaction between a subject within a video universe, and an unseen person accessing the desktop. This idea of a higher power that attempts to oppress or toy with the subject in the video highlights the concepts inherent in freedom and free will.

  5. Content Planning - The project will contain multiple videos within the video itself, all footage shot for the purposes of this project. It will also contain images from various programs and icons associated with the Quicktime Player and the Windows XP OS.

  6. Bibliography - Windows XP, Quicktime Player

  7. Visual/Conceptual References
Cibo Matto - Sugar Water (dir. Michel Gondry)

  8. Technologies - The project will primarily require After Effects, with minor work to be done on Photoshop. It will require learning the Mask tool, and advancing the use of Compositions.
